As a leading figure in Kinetic and Programmed Art, from 28 May to 1 August 2026, the Sala Belvedere at the Royal Palace in Naples will host an exhibition featuring Alberto Biasi, bringing him into dialogue with some of the leading figures on the international contemporary perceptual art scene. “Alberto Biasi and other visions of surfaces: Hsiao, Rotta Loria, Tornquist”, curated by Giovanni Granzotto, traces the career of one of the most significant artists of 20th-century Italian visual experimentation – whose works are held in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA in New York, the Hermitage in St Petersburg, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and Ca’ Pesaro in Venice – placing his research in relation to the investigations into surface, colour and perception developed by Gilbert Hsiao, Claudio Rotta Loria and Jorrit Tornquist.

A body of 35 works that traces some of the most significant moments in his artistic practice. Among these, two major environmental installations stand out: ‘Proiezione di luci e ombre n.2’ and ‘Light prism’, both presented during his last major solo exhibition at the Ara Pacis in 2021. Two works which, as well as being pivotal pieces in Biasi’s oeuvre, are emblematic examples of the artist’s ability to actively engage the viewer, triggering perceptual phenomena based on light, movement and visual interaction.

Alongside Biasi, the exhibition brings together the work of Gilbert Hsiao, Claudio Rotta Loria and Jorrit Tornquist, each of whom is represented by a selection of five works. Despite differences in style and approach, the three artists share a common exploration of the relationships between surface, form and colour, developed through solutions that challenge the viewer’s visual perception and retinal mobility.

With the exception of Biasi’s two environmental installations, all the works on display are wall-mounted: active, dynamic surfaces that transform as the viewpoint shifts, generating iridescent and unstable effects. The exhibition thus takes the form of a coherent and structured investigation into the perceptual possibilities of the surface, understood not as a static element but as a field of interaction between the work and the observer.

The exhibition highlights Biasi’s central role within this line of research, whilst emphasising its resonances and developments in the practices of the other artists. What emerges is an intergenerational and international dialogue that restores the vitality and relevance of a reflection on art as a perceptual experience.

“Alberto Biasi and Other Visions of Surfaces: Hsiao, Rotta Loria Tornquist” is sponsored by Palazzo Reale in Naples and the Directorate-General for Museums of the Ministry of Culture, and is organised by Il Cigno Arte in collaboration with Studio d’Arte GR, with the support of the Euromobil Group and contributions from Orler TV and Petrone Oleodinamica.
